Smiths News PLC is engaged in the wholesale distribution of newspapers, magazines and books. It distributes newspapers on behalf of national newspaper publishers, as well as regional daily and weekly newspapers. The Company serves around 30,000 retailers across England and Wales. As of August 31, 2009, the Company operates in two segments. Newspaper and magazine wholesaling (referred to as Smiths News) consists of the business operated by its subsidiary, Smiths News Trading Limited, which includes Smith News, InStore, NewsWorks and The Return Company. Book wholesaling (referred to as Bertrams) consists of the business operated by the Company’s subsidiary, Bertram Trading Limited, including Bertram Books, Bertram Library Services and Bertram Publisher Services. On March 20, 2009, the Company completed the acquisition of Bertrams, an United Kingdom-based book wholesaler, supplying books to a mix of independent booksellers, online and multiple retailers and libraries.
